In Northwest Native American country, the bear is King of Beasts. He is magnificent and ferocious, but he is also known as the “Elder Kinsman”, a symbol of friendship. His wide mouth is often portrayed with conspicuous teeth and a protruding tongue. Known as the protector of the animal kingdom, the Bear is the most powerful crest figure in Northwest Coast Native culture. Its strength and learned humility are gained through motherhood. Though independent and strong-willed, the Bear remains loyal to its family roots.
